Problem

Form Bio approached us to create a comprehensive platform that would revolutionize how biologists work by consolidating their tools in one intuitive interface. While existing scientific tools prioritize functionality over usability, Form Bio aims to set new UX standards in the industry. The platform enables biologists to perform complex tasks like CRISPR simulations and create custom workflows independently—no programmer required. My role involved conducting discovery workshops and developing entirely new UX patterns for tools that didn't exist in the market yet.

challenge

My task was to translate complex biotech concepts into intuitive product design. To bridge this gap, we assembled a specialized team of designers working alongside genetics expert and product manager from Colossal (Form Bio's parent company). As product lead, I conducted regular USM workshops to deeply understand the scientific workflows and pain points. These structured sessions helped us establish clear priorities and feature roadmaps while maintaining a user-centered approach. Our close collaboration with actual scientists ensured we were continuously validating our designs against real-world research needs.

outcome

After gathering requirements from scientists and developing the concept, we created a transformative platform with three key components: intelligent workflows, specialized genetic toolsets, and CRISPR Gene Editing App. With workflows, scientists can perform data analysis without a bioinformatician's assistance, simplifying and accelerating their work and accelerating research timelines by weeks. Our CRISPR simulation environment allows researchers to visualize gene editing outcomes virtually, eliminating months of laboratory trial-and-error.

We managed to created an interface that scientists described as "surprisingly intuitive." Form Bio now serves as the new benchmark for scientific software, demonstrating that powerful research tools can also deliver exceptional user experience.

Results

Form Bio's platform is now used by leading research institutions including Colossal, University of Melbourne, University of Texas, UCONN, and Solid Biosciences. The focus on creating intuitive interfaces for complex scientific workflows helped transform how researchers interact with their data and tools.

In 2025, Colossal achieved a significant milestone in their de-extinction work by bringing back the dire wolf, with Form Bio supporting their research process. It's rewarding to see the platform enabling scientists to focus more on their research and less on fighting with software.
